County Fleadh set to draw over 1,000 musicians to Claregalway this weekend

Over 1000 musicians of all ages from across the county will gather in Claregalway this weekend to compete in the annual Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe.

The annual celebration of traditional Irish music, culture and dance will take place next Saturday and Sunday at Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, bringing together competitors from every corner of Galway.

Children from as young as eight years old will take part in a range of age categories, including under-10, under-12, under-15, under-18 and senior competitions.

Participants will compete across a broad programme of events featuring a wide range of traditional instruments, singing, dancing, composition, storytelling and Irish language conversation over the course of the busy weekend.

Organisers expect a lively atmosphere throughout Claregalway as hundreds of performers, families, teachers and supporters descend on the village for the county’s biggest traditional music gathering.

Those who place highly in their respective competitions will earn the opportunity to represent Galway at the Connacht Fleadh, taking place in Mohill, County Leitrim, this July.

Successful competitors progressing beyond provincial level will then have the chance to take part in the prestigious All-Ireland Fleadh, which is scheduled to be held in Belfast this August.

A significant new addition to this year’s Galway Fleadh programme is the introduction of the Cuimse competitions, specifically designed for participants with disabilities or additional needs.

More than 30 competitors have already entered the Cuimse categories, which organisers say reflects a growing commitment to ensuring wider participation and inclusion within traditional Irish music.

The initiative, which was introduced recently in Mayo, is being embraced locally and highlights a strong emphasis on accessibility across Galway Comhaltas activities this year.

Speaking to the Advertiser, Marie Walsh of Galway Comhaltas, said organisers have made inclusion a major priority and welcomed the strong level of support shown for the new competitions.

“A large emphasis has been put on it this year throughout the county and it’s great to see the support,” she said.

She also encouraged members of the public to attend the weekend festivities, saying everyone would be warmly welcomed to Coláiste Bhaile Chláir throughout the event.

“Everyone is most welcome to come along to Coláiste Bhaile Chláir on Saturday or Sunday,” she said.

“I’m sure there will be lots of music to be heard in Claregalway throughout the weekend.”
