Judge warns of high price to be paid for speeding in urban areas

“I don’t need to hear about people speeding about in an urban area and the public being put in danger,” a judge at Ballinasloe District Court exclaimed before putting the driver in question off the road for six months.

Judge James Faughnan was told at Ballinasloe District Court that Gardaí detected Michael Sweeney, Dunlo, Ballinasloe, driving at up to 80kph in a 50kph zone at Society Street on June 17, 2025.

“This could be very dangerous in an urban area,” the Judge said. He was told Sweeney had seven previous convictions, including for speeding.

Judge Faughnan said the people of Ballinasloe shouldn’t have to put up with this sort of behaviour, which put them in danger, and imposed a fine of €500 and a six-month driving disqualification.

He added that the message should go out to any driver who thought they could ignore the rules of the road and put others in danger by their behaviour that there was a high price to be paid if they came before his court.
