Labour Councillor Helen Ogbu has backed Labour Women’s proposal for a €3 million Safe Fund to support victim survivors of domestic abuse, calling for urgent Government action to remove the financial barriers that trap people in dangerous situations.

Councillor Ogbu said:“On the doors across Galway, people are telling us about the real pressures they are under, and for those experiencing domestic abuse, the situation is even more stark. Too often, the question asked is why someone didn’t leave, but the reality is that for many, leaving simply isn’t financially possible.

“Safety needs funding, and too many people are being failed at the most critical moment of crisis. Labour Women’s Safe Fund is a practical, immediate solution. A €3 million, non-means-tested fund would provide direct support to survivors when they need it most, whether that is to leave an abusive home or to meet urgent essential costs safely.

“Financial insecurity is one of the biggest barriers to escaping abuse. Existing supports are often too slow, too complex, and too difficult to access in moments of trauma. This fund would cut through that, delivering fast, flexible support through trusted services.

“No one should ever be forced to choose between their safety and their financial survival. Across Galway, we know domestic abuse is a reality for too many behind closed doors. Survivors need support that meets them where they are.

“This Safe Fund is about dignity and immediacy. It would ensure people can access money quickly, without barriers or stigma, at the moment they need it most. Government must step up and establish this fund without delay.”
