Galway County Councillor Martin McNamara has resigned from Sinn Féin. The Athenry/Oranmore representative was co-opted onto Galway County Council in December 2024 following the election of Louis O’Hara to the Dáil.
Councillor McNamara has not made a public statement, and his reasons for resignation are unknown at this time.
However, in a statement released this afternoon, Deputy O’Hara, while thanking Councillor McNamara for his work, has pointed out that, when he was co-opted, he signed a pledge to resign his membership of Galway County Council should he leave Sinn Féin to facilitate a new co-option.
Deputy O’Hara said Councillor McNamara has indicated that he intends to continue serving as an Independent councillor.
Deputy O’Hara added that Councillor McNamara does not have a mandate to represent the area as an Independent Councillor and he is disappointed that he has refused to honour the agreement made.
