Son charged with assault causing harm to his mother in Ballybrit

The son of a woman who died of injuries following an assault in the city on Friday night, was remanded in custody following his appearance at Galway District Court via video-link from Castlerea Prison on Monday morning.

Judge Liz Healy remanded Dubravko Ostojic (33 ), of no fixed abode, who is charged with assault causing harm to his mother Milena Ostojic, at Claí Mór in Ballybrit, in custody until the May 11 sitting of the Court.

Ostojic is charged in relation to the death of his mother. The 65-year-old woman suffered serious injuries in an assault at her Ballybrit home on Friday night. The woman died at University Hospital Galway on Saturday morning.

The defendant was charged at a special sitting of Galway District Court on Sunday when an application for bail was refused by Judge Gerard Furlong who remanded the accused in custody, to appear by video link at Galway District Court on Monday.

He also requested that the accused be provided with all appropriate medical and psychiatric attention upon arrival at Castlerea Prison and for a psychiatric report to be compiled as soon as possible.

When the case came before Judge Liz Healy on Monday morning, Garda Sgt Damien Prendergast said that instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions were required in relation to the charge and that these were not yet available. The case was adjourned until May 11.
