One chance and one chance only warning for student

Every individual is entitled to one chance, one opportunity to keep their slate clean, but if they offend again there are no more chances for them.

This is the warning given by Judge Valerie Corcoran to a young university student who appeared before Galway District Court on a charge of possession of cocaine.

The court heard Garda evidence that on June 25 last he was observed behaving in a suspicious manner by Gardaí. He was stopped and searched and cocaine to the value of €80 was found on him. He admitted it was for his personal use and co-operated fully with Gardaí.

The defendant is 21 and a student at university. He works part-time to support his studies.

Michael Cunningham solicitor (defending ) pleaded that his client made a bad choice; he was trying something out. Mr Cunningham said he had a detailed discussion with his client on the implications of a drug conviction.

He had completed a Prime for Life drug awareness course and the defence pledged for leniency on this, a first offence.

Judge Corcoran issued her warning that people got one chance and one chance only with her, and struck out the charge on condition he makes a €400 donation to Pieta House.
