Dolan and Canney welcome investment in Monivea Forest as part of €3.13m National Recreation Funding

Galway East TD Albert Dolan and Minister Sean Canney have warmly welcomed the announcement of funding for recreational infrastructure at as part of a €3.13 million national investment in recreational sites.

Welcoming the investment, Minister Canney said this is a really positive investment for Monivea Forest and for the wider area.

“It’s a well-used local amenity and this funding will provide important upgrade works. In addition to this investment, Portumna Forest Park is included as part of a nationwide programme of ongoing maintenance works at over 200 recreational sites.

“It’s great to see Portumna Forest Park included in the wider maintenance programme. These are facilities people enjoy and ongoing upkeep is essential to make sure they remain safe, accessible and enjoyable.”

The €3.13 million investment marks the final year of a five-year strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte, which has seen over €16 million invested in recreation sites across the country.

Minister Canney added that we have seen a real increase in the use of these outdoor spaces in recent years.

“Investment like this is important, and I’ll continue to work to ensure Galway East continues to benefit as future programmes are developed.”

Deputy Dolan said the allocation of €76,000 for car park improvements and trail upgrades in Monivea Forest is a significant boost for the local community and for outdoor recreation in East Galway.

“This is a very positive announcement for Monivea and the wider Galway East area. Monivea Forest is a valued local amenity, used daily by walkers, families, and community groups. Investment in improved access and trail infrastructure will enhance the experience for all users and ensure the forest remains safe, accessible, and enjoyable year-round.”

Deputy Dolan highlighted the importance of continued government support for rural recreation:

“Projects like this not only improve quality of life but also support rural communities by encouraging tourism and local economic activity. The investment in Monivea reflects the growing recognition of the importance of outdoor spaces for both physical and mental wellbeing.”

The funding forms part of the final year of a five-year strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and Coillte, which has delivered over €16 million in investment nationwide.

Deputy Dolan acknowledged Minister Calleary and Coillte for their ongoing commitment to enhancing our natural amenities.

“I look forward to seeing these improvements delivered and to continued investment in our local outdoor infrastructure in the years ahead.”
