Drunk teen spat in Garda’s face while being arrested

An 18-year-old girl spat into the face of an arresting Garda when she was being arrested for being drunk and a nuisance at Eyre Square.

The teenager was shouting and trying to fight with others when the Gardaí arrived on the scene at 8.30pm on January 17 last.

Judge Valerie Corcoran was told at Galway District Court that the young woman was a danger to herself and others and had to be arrested. While the arrest was taking place she spat in a Garda’s face and kicked him in the leg.

While in custody a search revealed she had cannabis to the value of €25 in her possession.

Sean Acton solicitor (defending ) said his client was ashamed of her behaviour and apologised for it. She had no recollection of the evening. She worked and earned €200 per week.

Judge Corcoran described spitting in the Garda’s face as “absolutely disgusting”. However, she added that the defendant is young and she was willing to assist her. Ordering a Probation report, the judge said she hoped it would show this was out of character for the defendant, and she hoped she could keep her conviction-free.

The case was adjourned until July 5 to allow time for the preparation of the report.
