Good Samaritan rewarded by judge for kind deed

A Polish Good Samaritan who came to the assistance of a compatriot with limited English at Galway District Court was rewarded for his good deed when a judge struck out a public order charge he faced.

The man made himself known to the Court when a fellow Polish man was struggling to comprehend what was being explained to him by Judge John King at Galway District Court.

He was sitting in the public gallery awaiting his own case to be called when he volunteered as a Polish interpreter as no official interpreter was present in court at the time. With his assistance matters were progressed admirably.

When the Good Samaritan’s own case was called later in the sitting, the Judge was told he had turned up at Mill Street Garda station on the night of March 12 last in a highly intoxicated condition.

He was looking for a lift home as he had lost his wallet, and a taxi driver he approached had refused to take him home on a promise of payment later. He then made his way to the Garda station in search of a lift home, and was eventually arrested on a public order charge when he refused to leave.

“At least you got a bed for the night,” Judge King quipped, and reminded him that the Gardaí didn’t provide a taxi service.

However, in light of his assistance to the court earlier in the sitting, the Judge said he would strike out the charge against him. One good deed deserves another.
