What “good recovery” really looks like after illness or surgery

Recovery can mean different things to different people. It might mean healing after an operation, recovering from an infection or illness, or getting a health condition under control.

World Health Day was on Tuesday, April 7, and it encourages us to think about health holistically, including how well we recover.

Many people assume a good recovery means getting back on your feet quickly. But true recovery is about more than this. It can include:

• a gradual return of energy

• steady wound healing

• reduced pain and swelling

• improved mobility and strength

• sleeping well

• good mental well-being

However, recovery can be bumpy. Tiredness may linger, and swelling can take time to settle. For some, progress feels slower than expected, and that can be frustrating.

In some cases, additional supportive therapies may help with healing. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT ) involves breathing high concentrations of oxygen in a pressurised chamber.

This increases oxygen delivery to tissues that may be swollen, injured, or slow to heal. HBOT has been shown to support wound healing, reduce pain and swelling, stimulate new blood vessel growth, and help the body fight infections, assisting recovery in certain conditions.

HBOT is not a replacement for surgery, medication or rehabilitation, but it may form part of your recovery plan when natural healing processes need extra support.

At OxyGeneration in Galway, our state-of-the-art chamber seats 14 people. Oxygen is delivered via a comfortable face mask, and the treatment is painless and non-invasive.

Our experienced team can help you explore whether HBOT could help you heal after illness or surgery. So, if your recovery feels slower than expected, contact OxyGeneration today on 091 394 444.
