Irish holidaymakers prioritising peace of mind as medical emergencies top travel concern

Irish people are placing a growing emphasis on safety and security when heading abroad, with medical emergencies emerging as the biggest travel concern, according to new research from AA Ireland.

The 2026 Travel Trends and Habits Survey, which gathered responses from more than 1,180 travellers, found that 82 per cent of respondents say medical emergencies abroad are their biggest concern when travelling. This is significantly higher than concerns such as cancelled flights, lost luggage, or travel delays.

Despite rising costs, the Irish appetite for travel remains strong. New data from AA Ireland shows that nearly two-thirds of holidaymakers (64.8 per cent ) plan to stay within Europe for their next trip. Popular destinations like the Canary Islands are seeing a notable boost in interest. This shift suggests a preference for familiar, reliable locations as travellers remain cautious about regions affected by geopolitical tensions.

The research also highlights the growing importance of travel insurance in holiday planning. Almost 68 per cent of respondents say travel insurance is extremely important, and they would not book a trip without it, while a similar proportion say they always purchase cover just before travelling.

Cost and trust also play a key role in purchasing decisions. Almost 40 per cent of respondents say discounts or special offers would make them more likely to purchase travel insurance, while 32 per cent say knowing the policy is backed by a trusted brand such as AA Ireland would influence their choice.

Holiday habits remain strong among Irish consumers. Almost half (46 per cent ) take two holidays each year, while more than half (55 per cent ) prefer travelling abroad rather than taking a staycation.

The survey also revealed some lighter travel wish lists among Irish holidaymakers. When asked what superpower would make travelling easier, many respondents said they would choose teleportation, allowing them to skip airport queues and long-haul flights altogether. Others said they would love the ability to fly or see into the future, perhaps to avoid delays or secure the best travel deals.

When it comes to dream destinations, Japan topped the list for Irish travellers, followed by bucket-list favourites including Australia, the Maldives, New Zealand and Hawaii.

“Our research shows that Irish travellers are still very eager to explore the world, but they’re also more aware of the risks that can come with travelling abroad," an AA Ireland spokesperson said. "From unexpected medical emergencies to flight disruptions, having the right travel insurance gives people peace of mind so they can relax and enjoy their trip.

"With Europe remaining the most popular destination and many travellers taking multiple holidays each year, we’re seeing more people prioritise reliable cover and trusted providers when planning their trips.”

The findings also show that travellers value convenience and support while abroad. Instant claims processing and access to 24/7 medical support were among the features that respondents said would make them feel most secure while travelling.

With travel demand remaining strong and many Irish people planning multiple holidays each year, being prepared has never been more important. Travel insurance can provide reassurance when things don’t go to plan, allowing travellers to focus on enjoying their holiday.
