The Renmore Area Traffic Committee is appealing to motorists to avoid using Murrough Avenue and Renmore Park as a shortcut.
The group of concerned residents says it has resorted to asking Advertiser readers, who drive, to chose main road routes if they are not visiting their neighbourhood, plagued by rat runners seeking to skip traffic lights on the Old Dublin Road.
“We’re asking people not to use these roads out of respect to the residents living on these streets. Please use alternative routes,” says spokesman Pat Spellman. “It often does not really save any time, and at most saves just a few minutes, but makes life very difficult for the residents,” he said.
Last week, the committee met council officials at a roundtable arranged by Noel Grealish TD. It was attended by Councillor Terry O’Flaherty, Councillor Alan Cheevers, and Councillor Shane Forde. Cheevers said he expects officials to report on plans for the issue within six weeks, while Forde is concerned what effect works on the Dublin Road BusConnects project may have in Renmore. O’Flaherty wants the city council to liaise with Google Maps to remove Renmore from its route calculations.
A staggering 4,444 vehicles were recorded on Murrough Avenue in a single day, according to data collected by locals, and presented to officials.
City manager Leonard Cleary has confirmed traffic specialists will be tasked with suggesting solutions.
