Rapparees Open Day takes place this weekend

The Galway City Rapparees Open Day takes place this Sunday at 12pm in St Mary's College.

The event is open to anyone interested in trying rounders, whether completely new to the sport or coming from other codes. Players can continue to play GAA with their own club while also joining a GAA Rounders team.

“I’d encourage anyone who may have stepped away from sport to come back and give rounders a go — it’s a brilliant, inclusive game with something for everyone,” said club secretary Joe Naughton.

Galway City Rapparees are preparing for its first Senior Men's Championship campaign as they take on Limekiln on Sunday, April 19.

The Galway-based rounders club secured senior status last September when they were crowned All-Ireland Intermediate Men's champions. It was a breakthrough moment for the club as they prepare to take their place among the elite of GAA Rounders.

There will be no time to savour their senior status though. Facing Dublin giants Limekiln at home on the opening weekend will be a big test of Rapparees' credentials. Limekiln are one of the most established and successful clubs in the game.

The coming season promises to be the busiest in the club’s history. Galway Rapparees will field five teams across multiple grades, with Senior Men, Intermediate Women, Intermediate Mixed, Junior Men, and Junior Mixed sides all competing. In total, the club is set for up to 40 fixtures across the championship calendar.

Off the field, the club continues to grow its playing base and community. With over 70 members and teams catering for men, women, and mixed formats, Galway Rapparees have built a welcoming and inclusive environment for players of all backgrounds. The club will also be delivering Go Games sessions across Galway to introduce GAA Rounders to children from clubs throughout the county.

With a historic senior campaign ahead and participation levels continuing to rise, Galway Rapparees are not just stepping up — they are helping drive the future of rounders in Galway.
