Emma Moore of Galway City Harriers made her senior international debut at a major championships last Friday at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Torun, Poland, as she raced for Ireland over 800 metres.
Moore has had a great season to date breaking U23 records and winning national medals. She competed in the final of six heats of the 800m, probably the most competitive event on the programme. The GCH star raced well, placing fifth in her heat in a swift 2.02 clocking, and just missed out on a semi final berth, in a strong debut at the highest level.
Galway athletes compete in Wales
Two Galway athletes competed for the Irish Schools team at the SIAB International held in Wales last weekend, on a very hilly course in the Fanael Estate.
Both Galwegians competed in the Junior Boys competition, over a 4000m course comprising one small lap and two larger loops. Donal Coyle of Seamount, Kinvara placed 10th overall with a gritty run, while Patrick Lee of Presentation Athenry also raced well until forced to retire.
Despite a determined team effort, Ireland narrowly missed out on bronze, finishing just behind a strong Welsh side.
EGAC 8km
The annual East Galway Athletic Club 8k held last Sunday attracted a large turnout and a competitive field to the Skehana venue.
In the men’s event, Rian Collins of Athenry AC claimed victory in commanding fashion, ahead of Donal Farren of Letterkenny AC who secured second place, while Sam Nyhan, also representing Athenry AC, completed the podium in third.
The women’s race saw Holly Shaughnessy of Tuam AC take the top spot with an impressive run. She was followed by Evangeline Dolan, who clinched a well-deserved second place, while Sarah Keane of Abbey Running Club crossed the line in third to round out the medal positions.
