Galway City West and Knocknacarra councillor Donal Lyons has welcomed the reply he received from the Roads and Transportation Directorate, Galway City Council in relation to a Notice of Motion I had forwarded in relation to road safety on the Lower Cappagh Road.

Cllr Lyons submitted the following Notice of Motion after being contacted by a number of concerned residents and parents in relation to safety on this stretch of the Cappagh Road.

“Having received a large number of representations and correspondence from concerned residents and parents of children attending the Knocknacarra Educate Together National School who are seriously concerned regarding road safety on Cappagh Road Lower, I am requesting Galway City Council Roads Department/Active Travel Department to investigate the possibility of introducing traffic calming measures on Cappagh Road South including extra signage, repeat 50 KPH signs, Speed Detector Signs and any measures that will reduce speed on this road”.

Last week he received the following written reply:

“Roads and Transportation will investigate the possibility of introducing feasible traffic calming measures to reduce speed on Cappagh Road South including extra signage, repeat 50 KPH signs and Speed Detector Signs.. that they will investigate the possibility of introducing feasible traffic calming measures to reduce speed on Cappagh Road South including extra signage, repeat 50 KPH signs and Speed Detector Signs”.

Cllr Lyons said that he has already had discussions with the Roads Directorate at Galway City Council and have been given a verbal commitment that “Speed Detector Signs” will be installed on the road as soon as practicable.

“I want to acknowledge the cooperation of the staff in the Roads Directorate for their help and assistance in addressing my concerns,” he said.
