Mayo man’s bail condition is to keep out of Galway city

A JUDGE decided not to include the usual Garda Station sign-on conditions as part of bail conditions for a defendant, as she didn’t want the accused to have any reason to come into Galway city.

Gardaí objected to bail for Dylan Finn (no fixed address ) originally from Mayo, on the grounds that he couldn’t provide them with a permanent address and they had concerns he would not abide by conditions set. He was brought before Judge Valerie Corcoran at Galway District Court from prison where he is on remand.

Finn faces an assault causing harm charge among other serious charges. The Court heard it is alleged the assault took place when Finn was restrained by security staff at a business premises in the city. The alleged incident was captured on CCTV.

John Martin solr (defending ) said his client was a chronic alcoholic which led to a lot of his problems. He had a relapse on February 17 and was brought before a special sitting of Galway Court and had been in custody since then. He applied to have Finn granted bail.

The Judge said she was going to grant bail on strict conditions and the first of these was that he stay out of Galway city. The second was that he provide an address or the address of homeless accommodation to Gardaí, so long as it was outside the city. She wouldn’t impose the usual Garda Station sign-on condition as she did not want to give him an excuse to enter the city, but he would have to sign on at his local station, wherever he resided, after his release and observe an 11pm to 7am curfew there.

She also made it a condition that an independent surety of €2,000 be entered on his behalf, €1,000 in cash.
