Communities across both south and north Galway are reaping the benefits of a more reliable water supply this spring, thanks to two major mains replacement projects recently delivered by Uisce Éireann.
In south Galway, the people of Kilcolgan, Ballinderreen and nearby townlands are seeing the difference after almost 4km of old water mains along the N67 were replaced with new, modern pipes.
Further north, the communities around Carheens and Caherlistrane are also benefiting with more than 3km of old water mains replaced along the L2111.
Both sets of works, carried out under Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, have strengthened local water networks and improved day-to-day water services for homes and businesses across these Galway communities.
Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann’s Programme Manager, said the upgrades will make a real difference for these communities.
“These new mains will provide a higher quality of water supply for homes and businesses in these Galway communities,” said Mr Mac Namara. “They will also ensure a more reliable supply, reducing the likelihood of bursts and other operational issues on the network moving forward.
“The mains replacement will also help us to progress toward our long-term aim of driving down rates of leakage on our public network, reducing the volume of treated water lost underground through leaks.
“The aim of our Leakage Reduction Programme is to strengthen the network in order to meet growing demand, and to safeguard our precious water supplies in a smart, sustainable way,” Enda continued. “Projects like the ones recently completed in County Galway are examples of those aims being achieved in a way that deliveries for customers and communities.”
Uisce Éireann extends its thanks to local residents and businesses for their support and co-operation during the period of these works, all of which were carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme has dedicated teams in every county working hard every day to find and fix leaks to provide a more secure and reliable water supply. We currently carry out over 500 network repairs every week across the country and plan to increase this in the years ahead. We are replacing old infrastructure such as pipes to protect water, improve service, and support a stronger and more reliable network, helping us plan for the future as demand grows.
