Bus users across Galway are being ill-served by the local authorities’ failure to draw down €1 million in available funding for enhancing bus stops and bus shelters across the City and County.
This is the view of Fianna Fáil Galway West TD, John Connolly, who was reacting to figures provided to him by the National Transport Authority.
In Dáil Éireann, Dep Connolly requested figures for the “entire funding drawn down and spent” by both the Galway City and County Councils from the NTA’s Bus Stop Enhancement Programme in 2024 and 2025.
The NTA figures revealed a total of €1 million was available, split into €500,000 for each local authority. However, Galway County Council only drew down €134,080 - less than half of its allocation, while Galway City Council did not draw down any of its available portion.
“The failure of the City and County Councils to take advantage of this funding is perplexing, especially as both councils frequently discuss the challenge of insufficient funding,” said Dep Connolly.
“I am calling on both Galway local authorities to explain why this failure has been allowed to occur, and to make sure that in 2026, they avail of whatever funding is allocated. Bus users across Galway deserve nothing less.”
