Galway is preparing for a welcome surge of visitors over the coming days as tens of thousands are expected to descend on the city for the build-up to St Patrick’s Day next Tuesday.
Hotels, pubs and restaurants across the city are reporting strong bookings, with large crowds anticipated to line the streets for the annual St Patrick’s Day parade. The parade will cap several days of music, family entertainment and performances taking place across the city centre.
Former President Michael D. Higgins will attend the 2026 parade as Guest of Honour. A long-time advocate for the arts, culture and community life, his presence is expected to add particular significance to this year’s celebrations.
The 2026 parade will carry the theme “Legends & Rising Stars,” highlighting the people, stories and traditions that shape Galway’s identity.
A four-day programme of music and family entertainment will also take place in Eyre Square as part of the city’s St Patrick’s Festival.
Festivities begin on Saturday with a live music event running from 2pm to 7pm, showcasing local performers and kicking off the weekend’s celebrations.
Sunday will feature a full day of family activities including sports sessions with Galway Sports Partnership and Active Cities, as well as entertainment from children’s performer Jitterbug Jackson and a Youth Lates Showcase.
Live music will return to the square on Monday evening from 4pm, while the celebrations will conclude on Tuesday after the parade with a programme of traditional music in Eyre Square.
Organisers say the packed schedule aims to create a lively, inclusive festival atmosphere in the city, celebrating Galway’s culture, community spirit and creativity in the days leading up to St Patrick’s Day.
