Do you have a piece of music you have always wanted to play or sing in public?
Well if it is less than five minutes long, then submit it to the Cellisimo Playathon before Friday, May 1, for public performances on May 17.
Individual instrumentalists and vocalists must secure €500 worth of sponsorship from friends and family to guarantee a place on the programme, or €1,000 for groups. The money will fund Cellisimo, Galway’s new, annual cello festival.
Any type of music and ALL levels are welcome. Beginners, improvers, professionals - all can shine – and if they make the sponosorship target, they win a masterclass from Music for Galway’s artistic director, Finghin Collins.
In 2024, the first, in-person edition of Cellissimo, an international festival that celebrated the cello in all its diversity and glory, was held. It attracted over 5,500 people to Galway from far and wide. They were of all ages and backgrounds, including the initiated and uninitiated to classical music.
Music for Galway intends to present this popular festival again in 2027 and is looking for help to fund it.
Music for Galway was set up as a charity in 1981, and its main objective is to promote, encourage, manage and hold concerts, recitals, symposia, classes, readings, discussions and other musical events.
For nearly 45 years the organisation has been doing so, growing the interest and audiences for classical music in the west. This has been possible through regular funding from the Arts Council and Galway City Council, corporate sponsorship, ticket sales, and last but not least, the generosity of private donors.
