A truly stellar line-up of musicians from Wigmore Hall, the home of London’s chamber music, will visit Galway city next month.
The Wigmore Soloists, the legendary London concert hall’s associate ensemble, will bring a rare treat to Galway audiences, with a performance of beloved classics for clarinet quintet in St Joseph’s Church, Presentaion Road, on Friday, March 6, at 7.30pm.
Led by outstanding clarinettist Michael Collins and created by John Gilhooly, the Limerick man at the helm of Wigmore Hall, this concert features Collins playing alongside a quartet of Britain’s finest string players.
The programme includes three classics of the clarinet quintet repertoire: Weber’s Introduction, Theme and Variations, Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Quintet and Brahms’ pensive and immensely tuneful work for the same instrument combination.
Taking the name of one of the world’s most iconic concert halls (the first time an ensemble has been given this honour ), the group gives regular concerts at Wigmore Hall and in other major venues around the world.
The ensemble has recorded six discs with BIS Records which have received critical acclaim from Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, The Strad, and a Diapason d’Or Award for their 2023 recordings of the Berwald and Beethoven Septets.
This concert is generously sponsored by Tigh Neachtain and Music for Galway gratefully acknowledges funding from the Arts Council.
