IF JULY is giving way to August, then it’s time for the Strange Brew Summer Shindig, an always uproarious celebration of all that is great about indie and alternative in Galway and Ireland.
The Strange Brew Summer Shindig 5 takes place at the Róisín Dubh on Thursday July 30 at 7pm with an impressive line-up of some of the most promising indie/alternative bands from Galway and beyond taking to the stage.
Headlining the night are Giveamanakick. The Limerick duo of Steve and Keith play some of the most ferocious and enervating hardcore/punk/hard rock on the island, while on stage they give 110 per cent and buckets of sweat, working the crowd, crushing ear drums, and singing through air pilot masks.
The new wave/synth rock quartet Disconnect 4 recently released their debut EP Modern Love and it will hopefully be the first step on the ladder to greater things for Leon, Keith, Yvonne, and Eoin. Another band who know how to own the stage and work the crowd.
Lost Chord, led by Dave Phelan, play music that is influenced by the Krautrock of Neu!, Afrobeat, hard rock, and left field indie. A smorgasbord of ideas and some great tunes awaits Galway ears on the night.
The Summer Shindig isn’t all about hard rock and indie as Music For Dead Birds will bring a folk-pop sensibility to the night’s proceedings. The band is led by Irish-American Jimmy Monaghan, a talented and highly promising young songwriter with a gift for arresting songs and narrative lyrics.
Things will get loud again when Dublin trio The Funeral Suits take to the stage. The band was formed last year with the intention of writing “a soundtrack for the apocalypse”. They release their debut single on August 8.
Walter Mitty & The Realists recently won the highly prestigious Indie Week Canada, a four-day event which saw them overcome competition from all over the globe. This Galway/Limerick indie/dance/funk band have been described as “Talking Heads-meets-The Rapture” by Hot Press. They are currently recording their debut album.
Also playing are Feed The Bears and Jogging. Gugai will be DJing afterwards. Tickets are available from the Róisín Dubh and Zhivago.
