Being drunk near city waterways not advisable — Judge

Members of the public were so concerned to see a vulnerable man very close to city waterways that the Gardaí were contacted, Judge Valerie Corcoran was told at Galway District Court when the man appeared before her on two public order charges.

The individual, who is in the care of the Simon Community, was found in a drunken state at Dominick Street on February 2 last and Gardaí arrested him for his own safety.

He was again in a drunken state at Wolfe Tone Bridge on February 4, and was again arrested by Gardaí for his own safety.

The man told the Judge that he wanted to thank the Gardaí who always looked after him so well.

The Court heard he had 42 previous convictions, 35 of which were for similar public order offences.

His solicitor said that on both occasions before the court members of the public had become concerned because of his proximity to waterways.

Judge Corcoran warned him that he was putting himself at risk when intoxicated by being so close to fast moving water. The defendant replied that he didn’t mind what happened to him.

A €50 fine was imposed for each offence.
