An important new post-grad course at the University of Galway, for primary teachers working in Irish language schools, has taken a major step towards gaining approval, according to Fianna Fáil Galway West TD, John Connolly.

University of Galway has been granted permission by the Department of Education to seek Teaching Council accreditation for its proposed Máistir Gairmiúil san Oideachas.

This particular course will be a professional Master of Education postgraduate qualification to train teachers working in Irish-medium primary schools.

Dep Connolly was an early advocate of the proposed new course, raising it as an issue in the 2024 General Election, and speaking on the matter early in his Dáil term.

Deputy Connolly supported the University’s School of Education in seeking Department of Education approval for the course, raising the issue with both the Minister for Education and Higher Education.

“The increase of Gaelscoileanna has been a noticeable, and welcome, trend in Education in Ireland over the last 15 or so years,” said Dep Connolly.

“As such, the importance of educators being fluent in the Irish language has become even more urgent. I am delighted to have supported and campaigned for the University of Galway getting this new programme, and I urge the Teaching Council to give it accreditation and approval.”
