Galway Community College (GCC ), in partnership with Atlantic Technological University (ATU ) and Galway City Partnership, is proud to announce an upcoming Rubik’s Cube competition and tricks day. Following the success of the first-ever event of its kind in Ireland, schools nationwide are invited to express their interest in this unique event held at ATU on Friday, March 13.

The initiative began at Galway Community College after a chance encounter in a school corridor sowed the seed for a dedicated cubing community.

Organisers realised that the hobby provides a vital platform for mathematical and engineering-minded students to find their team and showcase their problem-solving skills. What started as a lunchtime club has grown rapidly, with a "buddy system" now in place where experienced cubers train new students.

Event Highlights: The competition is designed to be engaging, entertaining and challenging encouraging an environment where students can swap ideas and techniques. Participants can look forward to:

• Speed Cubing: Competitive rounds featuring students who can solve the cube in as little as 14 to 15 seconds.

• Rubik’s Cube Tricks: Showcasing the creative and "fun elements" of cubing.

• Mixed Relay Competitions: Team-based events that encourage collaboration.

• Flag Making: Creative challenges involving cube patterns.

From Beginners to Record-Breakers

The event caters to all levels. Source material highlights success stories like a junior captain who went from being unable to solve a cube to completing it in one minute and 18 seconds within just eight weeks. For more advanced "speed cubers," the atmosphere provides a thrilling challenge similar to "running a race," where focus and pressure lead to new personal bests.

How to register

In line with GCC and ATU’s commitment to widening participation, the event aims to ensure that students of all backgrounds and abilities feel welcome to take part and explore their potential.

Schools interested in participating in this growing national movement are encouraged to submit an expression of interest before Friday 27th of February. This is an opportunity for students to connect, compete, and "link up" through the shared challenge of the cube.
