Ballads of a Bogman in city centre

St Joseph’s to host classical performance

Leading Irish musicians, tenor Gavan Ring and pianist Fiachra Garvey, will perform Ballads of a Bogman in St Joseph’s Church, Presentation Road, on Wednesday, February 11, at 7.30pm.

The title of the programme is taken from the song cycle of the same name by Irish composer Stephen McNeff - a setting of poetry by Kerry poet Sigerson Clifford.

McNeff was hugely inspired by Vaughan William’s iconic cycle Songs of Travel, which also features on the programme. Beethoven’s masterful late E major solo piano sonata and a selection of popular Irish folk-songs round off the perfect evening’s entertainment as part of Music for Galway’s vocally themed 2026 concert season, Breathe.

Kerry-born Irish tenor Gavan Ring studied at the Schola Cantorum at St Finian’s College, Mullingar, before reading education and music at Dublin City University. Ring is a multiple prize-winner at competitions such as the Wigmore Hall Song Competition and the Concorso Lirico Internazionale di Portofino. His concert highlights include performances with the London Symphony Orchestra at the BBC Proms and Lucerne Festival under Sir Simon Rattle.

Wicklow-born pianist Fiachra Garvey is possessed of a maturity and profound understanding of his art, which when combined with his infectious enthusiasm for music-making, has already captivated audiences in concert halls across Europe and beyond.

Tickets cost €20 with concession for over 66 at €18. Solidarity tickets are €10, and the MfG Friend rate is €16.

The concert is sponsored by KPMG. and Music for Galway gratefully acknowledges the support of the Arts Council.
