Top NCT failure in 2025 revealed

Defective tyres have been revealed as the top NCT failure in 2025.

Over 250,000 cars submitted for an NCT last year failed the visual defect test because of problems with their tyres. Of the 1,744,895 tests carried out in 2025, tyres accounted for the highest number of visual defect fails with a rate of 14.3 per cent, followed by defective front suspension at 10.9 per cent, and defective steering linkage at 8.5 per cent.

Additionally, almost 133,000 vehicles received a 'dangerous fail' result meaning the vehicle is deemed unroadworthy to a dangerous level.

When checking tyres, the advice is to check key elements such as tread depth and tyre pressure, while also checking for bumps, or uneven wear of the tyre that, in extreme cases, could lead to a tyre blowout.
