Woman in court for years-old unpaid fines raises €200 to avoid custody

A woman who was brought before Tuam District Court on foot of a warrant for not paying fines dating back to 2019 was told that she was costing the State too much and she would have to be held in custody until she came up with the €200.

The woman told Judge James Faughnan that she couldn’t pay the money because she was on social welfare.

“This is costing the State too much,” the Judge told her. “A warrant had to be issued, people had to go out and serve it, process it and deal with it in court,” informing the woman that he was remanding her in custody. “You have to come up with the money,” he told her.

Later in the hearing the woman told the Judge that she now had the €200 to pay her fines. He struck out the charge once the money was handed over. The woman thanked him and the Judge replied “you’re welcome.”
