Galway dancer and choreographer Leonie McDonagh recently won the prestigious Ulster Bank PICK of the Pick’N’Mix”, the audience choice award, at the festival held in Belfast.
As a result of this success, Leonie has been invited to perform in the Belfast Festival at Queen’s University in October. Leonie, along with three other dancers, works under the banner of Ponydance.
Graeme Farrow, director of the BFQ, was so impressed with the Galway woman’s work that he asked her and the company to perform in the festival for the opening weekend.
“I was thrilled to hear Ponydance’s show was so well received by audiences and I believe it has the potential to travel internationally,” he said. “I was naturally keen to involve them in this year’s festival. When Leonie outlined plans for the show she brought a big smile to my face. It’s perfect festival material and should help to attract new audiences to dance.”
Ponydance have also been accepted into Absolute Fringe, formerly known as the Dublin Fringe Festival. However the company has no funding and Leonie is asking interested members of the public to sponsor Ponydance. Those who do will get tickets to the opening night and a drinks reception to Absolute Fringe which runs from September 5 to 20.
