Financial controller fined for drunkenness

A Dublin-based financial controller found his reserves diminished by €200 as a consequence of his being arrested for drunkenness while on a night out during the Galway Races.

Galway District Court was told Gardaí found the individual in such a drunken condition at Cross Street at 12.25am on July 28 last that he had to be arrested for his own safety and the safety of the public.

His solicitor pleaded that his client was in town celebrating with some friends and consumed way too much alcohol. He wished to apologise to the Gardaí for his behaviour, Judge John King was told. The defence added that his client was 26 and worked as a financial controller, and he was very anxious to avoid a conviction. He faced a public order charge for being drunk in public.

“It just didn’t agree with him on the night,” Judge King said, giving him the benefit of the Probation Act and a fine of €200.
