Taxi driver charged with sexual assaults sent for trial

A taxi driver charged with 28 counts of sexually assaulting two children is to face trial later this year.

At the Galway District Court last Monday Sgt Michael Broderick gave evidence of serving the book of evidence on the 46-year-old accused man.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces 28 sample charges of sexually assaulting the two children on various dates between January 2000 and December 2003 at a Co Galway location.

The court heard that the DPP had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court commencing October 6, 2009. Judge Aeneus McCarthy returned the man for trial and remanded him on bail, as set by the High Court, on his own surety of €3,000 and an independent surety of €6,000.

Conditions of bail include that the accused sign on at his local garda station three times a week, surrender his passport and not apply for any travel documents, and make no contact by any means with the victims.
