Galway’s champions Loughrea take on Ballygunner in the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship final at Croke Park on Sunday.

Both finalists won their semi-finals convincingly. Loughrea proved to be a class above their opponents from Derry, Slaughtneil, while Ballygunner breezed past Leinster champions St Martin’s from Wexford.

Loughrea are bidding to make history as they have never won the All-Ireland Championship. They hope to erase the bitter taste of 2007, when they lost by 3-12 to 2-8 to Kilkenny’s Ballyhale Shamrocks in their only final appearance until this year.

Despite their 24 county championship titles and six Munster championship titles, Ballygunner have only lifted the Tommy Moore Cup once. That was in 2022 when they overcame Ballyhale Shamrocks.

This won’t be the first time Galway takes on Waterford in the All-Ireland club hurling final. In 2009, Portumna took on De La Salle, with the Galway side securing their third of four All-Ireland titles.

Last year, Ballygunner were denied a shot at the All-Ireland by eventual runners-up Sarsfields in the Munster Club SHC final. Loughrea were beaten by St Thomas’ in the Galway SHC final.
