A new radio drama series set in a Galway hairdressing salon during Race Week will be broadcast on Galway Bay fm next week.
The comedy series, Hairs and Races, which was written and produced by Bernadette Prendergast and Declan Varley, tells the story of hairdressers Sharon and Brendan, who after years of working for other salons in the city, decide to make a break for themselves and set up the salon at a time when the Celtic Tiger has fled.
The series is one of the first Irish radio drama series produced under the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland's Dramarama scheme, which is part of the Sound and Vision proejct.
The episodes of 15 minutes’ duration star accomplished actors Diarmuid de Faoite, Maire Greaney-Daly, Ionia Ni Chroinin, Ollie Turner, Maire Kavanagh and Ruth O'Driscoll.
Each episode will be broadcast in real time, with Monday's episode set on Monday, Tuesday's set on Tuesday and so on, with the events of each episode reflecting real events happening in the city during Race Week.
It follows life in the salon as listeners get to meet their zany customers with zanier requests all set against the frantic backdrop of Race Week in Galway.
The series was commissioned by Galway Bay fm CEO Keith Finnegan who is delighted that his station will be among the pioneers of this new drive to encourage original drama on independent radio.
"The station is delighted to be one of the first to commission new locally written and produced drama such as Hairs and Races which is set in Galway and our listeners are in for a treat.
"Galway Bay fm has always been to the fore in encouraging new Irish talent, mainly in the field of music through Jon Richards' Origin series and now, we are glad to be leading the way in terms of commissioning new Irish radio drama," he said.
The series was recorded and supervised by award-winning producer Sean Cooney at the Castlegar-based RilMedia studios.
The five-part series will be be broadcast at 11.30am during the Keith Finnegan Show each day of Race Week and will also be available online at the end of the week.
