James Yuill - Nick Drake meets electronica?

THE ENGLISH singer-songwriter James Yuill has had critics, musicians, and independent labels stretching their imaginations in an effort to describe him and his music.

The best one has to be that on London label The Young & Lost Club: “James Yuill is like Nick Drake if he were still alive and signed to Warp Records.”

The funniest is certainly from the band Clue To Kalo: “James’ music is the music that will be playing in your head when you leave your house without any pants on.”

Galway will be able to see for itself when James plays Cuba*, Eyre Square, on Tuesday at 8pm.

The 26-year-old has released two albums Turning Down Water For Air and The Vanilla Disc. So what does James have to say about himself?

“I guess my sound is commonly referred to as folktronica,” he said. “A combination of folk and electronica…(obviously ). Something like The Postal Service, although I want to try to combine the harder side of dance. I'm a big fan of French electro, so I try my best to bust that together with a bit of Nick Drake.”

Support is from the excellent Galway folk-pop duo Music For Dead Birds. For more information contact 091 - 565991 or email [email protected]. See also www.myspace.com/jamesyuill
