Galway public invited to shape future of University Hospital Galway

University Hospital Galway is inviting the public to participate in a consultation on development plans for the hospital which will future-proof healthcare infrastructure in the region over the coming decades.

The next of these puiblic drop-ins will take place this Saturday November 29 from 11am to 7pm at St Joseph’s Community Centre, Shantalla.

Chris Kane, Galway University Hospitals Manager said they have a long-term vision to build two new bed blocks with 300 additional inpatient beds; a new Emergency Department, ICU and Surgical block, a new cancer centre, laboratory and a new Women and Children’s unit on the campus.

“We need to expand and develop UHG to meet the growing demand for healthcare services right across our region. Outdated facilities that no longer meet modern standards need to be replaced. We need to ensure the region’s only model four hospital achieves the highest standards and delivers the best possible outcomes for patients.

“To help progress these transformative plans, a permanent helipad base is essential. It’s a critical enabler for emergency access and is necessary to deliver complex care for our population,” said Chris Kane.

The helipad will allow faster emergency transfers and support service continuity during construction phases.

“We are now delighted to welcome all local residents, business members and community groups to review our plans for the hospital development and to offer feedback. We want to hear from you.

“The views of our local community are important and will help to shape the future of healthcare in the West and North West region for the next 40 years.”
