Higgins welcomes progress but calls for increased ophthalmology capacity as over 3,600 people await eye-care treatment in Galway.

Fine Gael Councillor Clodagh Higgins has welcomed the progress made nationally in reducing some hospital waiting lists, but said newly released Parliamentary Question figures show that Galway continues to face major pressure in ophthalmology, with 3,663 people currently awaiting treatment or assessment.

The latest figures show that Galway has 3,663 people waiting for an ophthalmology appointment, with 450 people waiting specifically for cataract surgery.

Cllr Higgins said that while national initiatives have helped stabilise some lists, the scale of the challenge in Galway shows that further targeted investment is urgently needed.

“I welcome the progress that has been made, particularly through national waiting-list initiatives, but these figures clearly show that ophthalmology in Galway requires additional attention,”Cllr Higgins said.

“More than 3,600 people are waiting for eye-care treatment across the county, and that number simply demands increased capacity”.

She noted that delays in eye care can have a major impact on independence, mobility and quality of life, especially for older residents.

“Timely access to eye care is essential. When people are waiting long periods for cataract surgery or specialist assessment, it affects their ability to drive, stay active and remain safe in their homes. Given our ageing population, this issue is only becoming more pressing”.

Cllr Higgins said she is asking Government and the HSE to ensure that Galway is prioritised for additional ophthalmology resources as part of ongoing capacity expansion.

“The groundwork has been laid and progress has been made, but we now need to build on that,” she said.

“Galway must be included in any next phase of expanding ophthalmology capacity – whether that’s additional staffing, more surgical access, or improved diagnostic provision”.

She confirmed that she will continue to raise the issue locally and nationally to ensure Galway families receive timely, accessible, high-quality eye care.
