In a world where “green” labels are easy to print but hard to prove, a quiet movement is helping separate genuine commitment from good intentions.
The global 1% for the Planet network asks businesses to give 1% of their annual sales (not profits ) to verified environmental causes. Each year, that giving is audited and certified, creating a rare kind of accountability in sustainability: proof, not promises.
Among Ireland’s 21 members is Galway-based ECOFUEL™, which this autumn received its second consecutive 1% for the Planet certification. Over the past two years, ECOFUEL™ has contributed €27,683 in verified donations, funding four acres of native forest restoration through Irish charity Hometree.
Hometree’s work spans the west coast of Ireland, where remnants of the Wild Atlantic Rainforest are being carefully protected and expanded. It’s slow, grounded progress removing invasive species, collecting native seed, and allowing nature to recover on its own terms.
ECOFUEL’s membership isn’t about carbon offsets or marketing. It’s part of a growing belief that every business, large or small, should return a portion of its revenue to the planet that sustains it.
As winter fires begin to glow across Galway, it’s worth remembering that a stronger forest somewhere is quietly growing because of that same warmth.
