Labour Councillor Helen Ogbu has expressed deep concern at the latest homelessness figures released by the Department of Housing, which show 16,614 people in emergency accommodation nationwide, including 5,238 children.
She said the figures reflect a growing housing challenge that is now being felt in every community, including Galway, where families, young people, and older residents are finding it increasingly difficult to secure stable and affordable homes.“Behind these figures are real people – families and individuals who urgently need safe and secure housing. Every one of the 5,238 children recorded in emergency accommodation deserves the stability of a home where they can grow, learn, and thrive,” said Cllr. Ogbu.
She noted that while the crisis is complex and cannot be solved overnight, it demands a renewed focus on practical solutions and stronger collaboration across all levels of government.
“Here in Galway, I hear every week from people who are doing everything right but still cannot find a home. We need a coordinated response that delivers real outcomes – not just plans and promises. The focus now must be on delivery: building more public and affordable homes, supporting tenants, and ensuring that vacant properties are brought back into use quickly.”
Cllr. Ogbu reiterated Labour’s call for targeted, evidence-based measures, including a genuine ban on no-fault evictions to provide immediate security for renters; significant investment in public and affordable housing to meet growing local demand; and enhanced powers for local authorities to identify and bring vacant homes back into use.
“This is a national challenge, but one that can be met through leadership, partnership, and decisive action,” she said.
“We all share a common goal – ensuring that every person in Ireland has a place to call home. I am calling on Government to work with local authorities, opposition parties, and community organisations to turn that goal into a reality,” she said.
