There are currently many CAO course choices available to students sitting the Leaving Certificate in 2026, and it can sometimes be difficult to keep up with all the new developments. However, it is extremely important for students to research both new and existing courses thoroughly to make informed career decisions.

Universities and colleges regularly update their course offerings, often reflecting changes in the job market. In an era where AI is expected to significantly impact the workforce—and potentially render some current jobs obsolete—it is essential to future-proof your career.

Being aware of new courses gives students extra time to research, prepare, and plan. For those currently in their 5th year, attending open days is particularly important. Entry points and subject prerequisites can change from year to year, so students should research entry requirements annually.

Each year, the number of available courses increases, including apprenticeships and tertiary degrees. These can be excellent alternatives to high-points CAO courses, as some tertiary degrees do not require CAO points at all.

Comparing degrees, apprenticeships, and tertiary options effectively—especially by understanding what is new—allows students to evaluate course content, facilities, and graduate outcomes more thoroughly. Being aware of additional or less competitive options increases the chance of securing a place that meets a student's needs and goals.
