A thundering goal from Conor Kavanagh lashed to the net proved the impetus for a historic 2-16 to 0-19 win by the city side in a thrilling game in Athenry.
The deserved win in a hard-hitting match sees Mellows back in senior hurling in 2026.
For long periods of the Senior B Hurling Championship Final against Ahascragh-Fohenagh, it was a toss of a coin as to who would go on to win.
With the team both on 0-9 at the break, it was a question of who would seize the initiative and roar on to victory, and it was Mellows who obliged.
Ahascragh-Fohenagh were architects of their own downfall as two key turnovers led to the two goals that swung this match the way of the city team.
Five minutes after the break, Mellows full forward Conor Kavanagh sent the fans into delirium with a rocket of a shot that sent them on the road to victory.
Mellows added a second goal through captain Tadhg Harron which was the difference between the sides at full time. Harron was on fire throughout, hitting 1-12 on the afternoon.
Manager David Collins praised his team for implementing all they had planned during months of hard training.
“I’m delighted for them. They put in the hard work. They left everything out there. Super bunch of lads. The goals changed the game. We came in as underdogs and we knew we had too fight for everything, and they did.
“I’m delighted for them. Tadhg Harron is a fantastic athlete and a fantastic person on and off the pitch,” he said, saying he is looking forward to getting back to senior A hurling next year.”
“This is a reward for everyone associated with the club, who supported us and who fed us,” he added.
