Portumna songsmith Johnluke has the flair for a comedic take on love songs

Singer-songwriter Johnluke will bring his distinctive sound to Monroe’s this Friday, October 24, at 7pm.

Hailing originaly from Portumna, Johnluke first introduced himself to the Irish music scene with his debut single ‘Already Been Told’, released in March, 2024.

His catalogue has expanded in the months since, and his creative ambition is clear, having “an encyclopaedia of songs for the world to hear,” as he says himself.

The County Galway man’s style is characterised by pop, folk and country influences, and an earnest, storytelling instinct with comical romantic lyrics, upbeats melodies and catchy hooks.

Johnluke’s appearance at Monroe’s Live this Friday is a hometown, headlining performance that coincides with the release of his debut new EP, Comical Romance Vol.1, which features five tracks.

Speaking about the album, he said it is “five songs, with five different stories, and it was a blast to create such a unique and diverse piece of art.”

He has gained recognition from across the Irish music sector and was a finalist in the Galway?Bay?FM Irish Music Month for 2024.

Johnluke was selected by Today?FM as one of the top 5 emerging Irish artists in their Ireland’s ‘Next Big Busker 2025’ campaign, during which he performed with the support of Dave Moore and used the platform to raise funds for Focus?Ireland.

Influenced by the likes of Ed Sheeran, Paulo Nutini, Noah Kahan, James Bay, and Kodaline, his growing catalogue features singles such as ‘City Lovin’, ‘Royalty’, ‘Letters’, ‘Change Me’, and ‘Green Eyes’.

Together, they offer a survey of his sound, as it draws from folk roots but intersects with the directness of pop, and the narrative stance of country.

As Johnluke continues to build his profile, tomorrow – Friday - is a chance for a Galway audience to experience an emerging artist in his home county.

Johnluke at Monroe’s Live this Friday night from 7pm, will be supported by Andrew Dolan and Jack Reilly in the intimate surrounds of the Backstage venue.
