A Mayo woman who attacked and injured a Garda as she was being released from custody in the early hours of the morning was “very upset” by her behaviour, her solicitor told Galway District Court.
Veronica Crowley, 3, Moyvale Lawn, Ballina was arrested for a public order offence in Galway city and taken into Garda custody. Judge Fiona Lydon was told that when Crowley was being released at 5.20am she attacked a female Garda, pulling her hair and punching her in the face.
The Judge asked if there would be a victim impact statement from the Garda in question and was told that although the Garda was shaken by the incident and had attended A&E, she had not been seriously injured.
The Court heard that Crowley was 39 and unemployed and admitted she had a problem with drink. She was attending AA meetings, her solicitor said.
The defence added that Crowley was very embarrassed by the incident and very upset that she had injured the Garda and had asked to apologise publicly to the Garda.
She accepted what she did was completely wrong and was now doing what she could to get her life in order.
Judge Lydon noted that two bench warrants had already been issued for the defendant and warned her to turn up for sentencing on December 10 as she’d be finishing the case with or without her. She ordered a new Probation Report be drawn up for that date.
