The Housing Finance Agency (HFA ) has announced €500,000 in funding for 19 community-focused initiatives across 10 counties, including three in Galway.
The funding – doubled from €250,000 in 2024 – will be provided through the HFA’s Social Investment Fund (SIF ), which supports projects that enhance neighbourhoods, promote inclusion and improve quality of life in communities where HFA-funded homes are delivered.
The HFA, which provides loan financing to Approved Housing Bodies (AHBs ), Local Authorities and Higher Education Institutions (HEIs ) to support the delivery of social and affordable housing, established the SIF to complement housing developments with facilities and initiatives that strengthen the social and economic fabric of communities.
Three projects in Galway were awarded funding — Galway City Council has been awarded funding for a Community Café at SCCUL Enterprise Centre in Ballybane targeting older adults, youth, migrants and those at risk of isolation.
University of Galway has been awarded funding for the creation of a neurodivergent community garden on its South Campus for students, staff and local residents.
Galway Simon will receive funding for the development of a therapeutic community garden at its Emergency Service residence in Newcastle, which support those who experience chronic homelessness and social exclusion.
Commenting on the funding awarded, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD, said the Housing Finance Agency plays a key role in facilitating the delivery of the social and affordable housing needs throughout the country. People need these homes and the HFA plays a crucial role in our delivery.
Housing is a top priority for Government, and creating sustainable communities with infrastructure and amenities that promote inclusion and quality of life is vital to success.
Initiatives such as this Social Investment Fund are central to creating homes and communities where families can be supported to live safely and securely.
With funding for these projects doubled since last year, 19 communities across 10 counties will benefit from the inclusive community supports these projects create, alongside the increased delivery of social and affordable housing the HFA have provided funding for.
Social and affordable housing schemes are continuing to expand and develop year on year, supported by unprecedented levels of investment from this Government and in partnership with local authorities and AHBs including the HFA. I am determined to continue this progress of housing and supports to create sustainable communities.”
Oliver Lydon, Urban & Community Development Officer with Galway City Council said they are delighted to receive this support from the HFA Social Investment Fund.
“This funding will ensure the establishment of a community café that brings people together, supports local jobs, and strengthens the heart of Ballybane for years to come.”
Fintan Maher of Galway Simon Community said they are delighted to receive funding from the HFA Social Investment Fund towards the development of a community garden for residents in our Emergency Accommodation in Galway City.
“The garden will enable the residents and staff team to come together as a community or access an outdoor space where they can seek solitude from the busyness of life. Having such a space will support the residents in their recovery and re-integration.”
Dr Helen Maher, Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at University of Galway, said that University of Galway has taken tremendous steps to enhance the campus for the benefit of all students, whether it’s study areas, organic allotments, active routes and inclusive, accessible, sensory-friendly spaces.
“The neurodivergent community garden is another shining example of our efforts to ensure our campus is for all,” she concluded.
