McDonagh seeks clarity on planned Uisce Éireann works through South Park

At this week’s Galway City Council meeting, Councillor John McDonagh raised the issue of plans for new pipes to be laid through South Park, following concerns brought to his attention by residents living nearby. He said that neither Councillors nor the Claddagh Residents Association had been informed that such works were proposed.

It was confirmed at the meeting that Uisce Éireann is carrying out works to lay pipes through South Park. However, it remains unclear whether these pipes are intended for water, storage, or sewerage purposes. The works are believed to be linked to the Mutton Island wastewater treatment plant, but this has not yet been fully confirmed.

Councillor McDonagh noted that these works are not part of the South Park Masterplan, and said that residents have a right to full information about what is being undertaken in their community.

He has requested that Galway City Council and Uisce Éireann provide full clarity on the purpose, type, and destination of these pipes, and that the Claddagh Residents Association and local residents be contacted and fully informed as soon as possible.

“Transparency and open communication are essential when works of this nature are taking place in such an important public amenity,” Councillor McDonagh said.
