New 'age friendly' strategy for Galway

Galway County and City councils have unveiled the Age Friendly Strategy 2025–2030, a five-year plan designed to make Galway “a great place to grow old in”.

The strategy sets out actions under three priority areas: the built and public environment, community and social inclusion, and information and wellbeing services, to address the needs of the county’s rapidly ageing population.

Presenting the strategy, director of services Michael Owen, highlighted both the progress made since the first plan in 2014 and the challenges ahead. He acknowledged the wide community input that shaped the strategy, with more than 440 survey responses and workshops held under the World Health Organisation’s eight age-friendly themes.

“This document outlines not only key demographic trends but also the level of development taking place across Galway. It shows what is working well, and identifies priorities going forward. I want to thank all those who took part in developing this strategy,” Owen said.

Councillors warmly welcomed the strategy. The cathaoirleach, Cllr David Collins (FG ) emphasised the importance of implementing its measures in light of Galway’s ageing profile: “This is about making life better for senior citizens in our county.”

Cllr Mary Hoade (FF ) seconded the plan and paid tribute to Owen and his team, stating: “This strategy shows we are making Galway a better place for people to grow older in. I want to congratulate all involved.”

The strategy also includes a monitoring framework, with lead partner agencies tasked with reporting progress over its lifetime.
