Free 'Insights into Dementia' Course for Family Carers Returns

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland (The ASI ) is inviting family carers of people living with dementia to take part in its free course, 'Insights into Dementia', Informing and Empowering Family Carers from Wednesday, November 5 to December 17.

The seven-week course will take place in Clifden Town Hall, Sky Rd, Clifden, Co. Galway, H71 AE09, from 10am to 12.30pm.

With an estimated 3,600 people living with dementia in Galway and 64,000 people across Ireland, this evidence-based programme provides a welcoming and supportive space for carers to share experiences and gain practical knowledge on topics such as understanding dementia, communication strategies, personal care, and self-care.

Therese Shannon, Lead Tutor with ASI's Learning and Development Department, said, "Supporting or caring for a person living with dementia is both rewarding and challenging. This in-person course in Galway is designed to provide family carers with practical tools, insights, and support to feel more confident in their caregiving role. It covers key areas such as communication, daily routines, and responding to behaviours, while offering a space to connect with others in similar situations - helping family carers feel less isolated."

The course runs over seven weeks, covering a range of topics to support family carers. It begins with an introduction and an overview of dementia, followed by sessions on changing relationships, self-care, and how to find reliable information.

Later weeks focus on communication, meaningful activities, managing behaviours, and ensuring safety at home. The course also covers personal care, nutrition, and healthy eating. It wraps up with a review, certificate presentation, and guidance on next steps.
