An application has been submitted to Galway City Council to build the first of three proposed energy centres in Galway designed to generate heat, then distribute it by underground piping to apartment blocks, hospitals, schools and industrial customers.

Local residents’ concerns about traffic disruption during the installation of an initial 2.4km stretch of piping was relayed to the private company, Empor Investments Limited, prompting it to pause project delivery. It will hold a public meeting at the Maldron Hotel, this Friday, October 3, from 2pm to 7pm.

“This information event is an opportunity for the community to learn more about this project, gain insight into what it means for the area, ask questions, and share feedback directly with the project team,” says Councillor Alan Cheevers, who stressed the importance of attendance.

The power station, to be located at the Merlin Park Industrial Estate, near the NCT centre, will pump heat generated by 9MW of low-carbon gas boilers, electric engines, solar panels and heat-pumps to large customers, with the ambition to eventually connect to homes, providing cheap and environmentally friendly heating.
