Galway Mountain Rescue has officially opened applications for recruitment for its 2026 Aspirant Team.

Galway Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT ), the voluntary emergency service that provides 24-hour cover for the upland and remote areas of counties Galway and Clare, is now recruiting for its 2025/2026 Aspirant Team.

GMRT is seeking committed, motivated individuals with a passion for the outdoors who are interested in training to become part of the team. Applicants should have strong hillwalking or mountaineering experience, good physical fitness, and a willingness to respond to emergency callouts in challenging conditions.

Successful candidates will join the team as aspirant members, undertaking a structured training programme in navigation, first aid, rope rescue, and search management, while shadowing experienced volunteers on exercises and callouts. Following this probationary period, aspirants may be invited to progress to full team membership.

GMRT is made up entirely of trained volunteers. The team works closely with An Garda Síochána and other emergency services, responding to incidents ranging from lost walkers and injured climbers to multi-agency search operations.

Applications for the Aspirant Team are now open and will close on October 10.
