A judge asked a defendant before her at Galway District Court on Monday if there was any particular reason for him to be lying in the middle of the road in an intoxicated state.
Anthony Watts told Judge Fiona Lydon that he was at a funeral that day and just fell asleep. He had drank before the funeral and again afterwards.
Garda Sgt Christy Brown told the Court that on January 1 last Gardaí received a report of an a man in an intoxicated condition causing a nuisance. When they located Watts he was asleep in the middle of the road and had to be arrested for his own safety and the safety of others.
The Judge was told Watts had no offence on his record since 2007. A fine of €200 was imposed.
