One man was badly injured and several pedestrians had a lucky escape when a car mounted the pavement on a busy side street in Galway city centre on Wednesday.
One male pedestrian was struck from behind when a car drove up over the kerb at the corner of Eyre Street and Bóthar Irwin. The impact flattened a steel sign post and scattered vehicle debris around the narrow street, narrowly missing a number of pedestrians during the busy city centre lunchtime rush.
The adult male was treated for serious back injuries by a rapid response paramedic, and transferred to an ambulance, according to gardaí at the scene on Wednesday afternoon.
One eye witness said “it was only pure luck” the car did not hit other walkers, potentially injuring several more pedestrians.
